Loathe

Their Story

Introduction

Loathe is an English nu metalcore band from Liverpool, formed in 2014. Their sound blends metalcore and nu metal with experimental influences such as shoegaze, progressive metal, and industrial music. The lineup includes vocalist Kadeem France, guitarist/vocalist Erik Bickerstaffe, drummer Sean Radcliffe, and bassist Feisal El-Khazragi.

Signed to SharpTone Records, they’ve released two EPs and three studio albums: Prepare Consume Proceed (2015/2016), The Cold Sun (2017), I Let It In and It Took Everything (2020), and The Things They Believe (2021), the latter an ambient companion to the 2020 album. Loathe have received industry recognition, earning nominations from the Heavy Music Awards and Metal Hammer in 2018, and were voted one of the top emerging mainstream contenders in a 2020 Revolver poll.

History and Present

Loathe originated from the Liverpool metalcore band Our Imbalance, with guitarist Erik Bickerstaffe and later vocalist Kadeem France forming the core of the rebranded lineup. By 2014, the group—joined by drummer Sean Radcliffe, guitarist Connor Sweeney, and bassist Shayne Smith—shifted toward a darker, more experimental identity. They released debut singles in 2015 and independently issued their first EP Prepare Consume Proceed, initially using anonymous stage names and masked imagery. After signing with SharpTone Records in 2016, the EP was re-released to positive reviews, and the band phased out their early anonymous aesthetic.

Loathe’s debut album The Cold Sun arrived in 2017, followed by extensive touring across the UK and Europe. In 2018 they released a split EP with Holding Absence, earned nominations from Metal Hammer and the Heavy Music Awards, and replaced departing bassist Shayne Smith with Feisal El-Khazragi. They continued festival appearances and support tours while writing material for their next album.

Between 2019 and early 2020, Loathe released several singles and toured internationally, culminating in their second album I Let It In and It Took Everything in February 2020, which marked a major artistic evolution. An instrumental edition followed later that year. In 2021 they released the ambient companion album The Things They Believe, expanded their lore-driven sound, and embarked on a UK tour performing their 2020 album in full. Guitarist Connor Sweeney departed later that year. Throughout 2022–2023 the band released new singles, collaborated with other artists, and paused touring to focus on their fourth album.

In late 2024, Loathe joined Spiritbox’s North American tour and confirmed their upcoming album’s completion. They debuted new songs live, including “Gifted Every Strength,” released in May 2025 as the beginning of a new era, followed by another new track, “Revenant.” In mid-2025 the band announced major headline tours across the US and Europe.
